What you're supposed to do is interact with the staff on the altar, then kill the roaming Conjured Ancestors before they reach Shan Jitong's portal in the middle of the ruins. Do this until your bar reaches 100.

I picked up this quest last night in the Beta and found it hard to complete as written. The way the quest is written it appears that one is supposed to pick up Pei-Zhi's staff from the altar in front of him and use it to destroy the Conjured Ancestors before they can fuel Shan Jitong's spell. Once I had the staff a progress bar appeared low in the centre of my screen that, unlike the quest text, informed me that I needed to destroy 100 of the Ancestors. The staff in my bags could not be either equipped or placed on an action bar.

I tried completing the quest by using the staff over about 15 minutes even logging in and out twice. The Conjured Ancestors were almost all neutral (yellow) and remained so no matter what I did. They were, therefore, unattackable with the staff. In those many tries I was able to attack exactly 3 Ancestors with the staff. I actually was able to destroy just 1 of those using the staff because the Ancestors required more damage from hits from the staff than I could deliver before they reached the vortex of Shan Jitong's spell. Finally I resorted to attacking with my normal spells and had all 100 down in under a minute.

I think that both the quest text and mechanics need serious work. Making the specifics of the quest more explicit in the quest text would be extremely helpful but the real problem is in the mechanics. If we must use the staff it needs to do a bit more damage to the Ancestors and it either need a special button or needs to provide for placement on a hot key. More importantly yet the Ancestors need to be attackable from the point that they enter the area of the channeling spell if not before. Those changes are a minimum for completing the quest if one must use the staff. If the staff is irrelevant and one can simply use normal attacks on the Ancestors then why include retrieving the staff at all? It is a red herring at that point because speaking to Pei-Zhi would be sufficient to initiate the quest. The designers of this quest need to give it more thought and attention.

After interacting with staff just nuke spirits before they reach the summoner, not the altar. Each killed will give you 5 points on the bar which total is 100. Around 50ish two additional mobs will spawn.

After I received credit for the quest, I had to re-log to see Pei-Zhi, I could see the ? but he wasn't there.

Sometimes he is there but not clickable. If you don't want to relog just press shift + V to toggle friendly health-bars on and the rightclick his name.
Press shift + V again to turn all health-bars off again or just press V to toggle enemy plates on again (if you didn't know this already :P)

For those who find they didn't do all the quests and look for this one, remember that the direct pre-quest is the Simulacrumble. Without it you won't receive this quest.

Appears to be bugged for some players both on US and EU servers, possibly since 5.1. Prior to the patch I've completed the quest on two toons and now the staff can't be looted at all. It's clickable and the opening cast succeeds however no loot window appears. Relogging did not solve the problem for neither me nor the five other players attempting to loot it in the area.

Edit: Made a ticket to a GM and got it marked as completed. Currently, this is the only way to continue the chain if it's bugged for you. It wasn't patch-related as far as he/she was aware of, however.

I could not click on them either after the staff, so i did as someone said, got the spirits b 4 they got to the middle, 2 doods appeared, ganked them, then continued with spirits, when bar was filled it disappeared and the one in the center went to statue and disappeared, then the floating guy came down and gave 3 more quests

Really random, but I guess I did all the steps up until this quest before moving on to the next zone (abandoning remaining quests). Then when I was doing the Legendary quest Wraithion gave me this quest.. I was puzzled.

You just need to kill as many spirits as possible that are trying to fly towards the portal. Don't worry about how many are making it through. Just kill many until that purple bar fills up and begins glowing then your done.

In 7.3.5 I still had to log out and back in to see the guy to turn in the quest. The ? was there but not the person. /reload ui didn't work.

this quest is currently broken.

Interacting with the Staff of Pei-Zhi object only gives you an empty loot window, so you can't complete the second part of the quest.
