It's not a 100% chance to free a peon with every web you kill. Some webbings have npcs that will heal and buff you though.

if you are a hunter or lock, you might wanna know that if your pet destroys the egg youll get no credit for the rescued peon

After "killing" the webbing you have a chance to have a guardian:

Mage (Blood Elf) - Firebolts
Warrior (Orc) - Melee, HP Shout
Shaman (Tauren) - Rare and most useful: ~1k heal every 2 sec.

Or a peon - you need 5 of them.

Pretty funny to get 4-5 guardians and attack some spiders.

Seems like if you cut open the sacs, the first things you get are the NPCs (please do correct me on that if I'm wrong). However once you have 3 NPCs, the rest of the sacs you open while the NPCs follow you have a 100% chance of revealing a peon.

Personally, I find the guardians rather annoying. They have a huge aggro range and will attack things when you don't want them to. It may just be me who feels this way, but I stand by it. This is very annoying as a rogue. :D

You cannot have more than 3 guardians with you, no matter what class they are. Though you can still pop cocoons after you saved all peons for different quests in that area!

If you are a class with a pet, for example lock, do not send you felguard to one shot the web, nothing will come out of it. It has to be you that kills the web and not your pet.

See, noob, the problem with a peonz is that: (1) they're dumber than dirt; and (2) they're weaker than a bloitin' leper gnome. Of course they're the first to be taken by the chakin' Scourge!

This puts me in a flakin' predicament, see. Without peonz, manual labor stopz. No peons, no construction, noob.

Find and release my peonz, <race>. If they're alive, you'll find 'em spun up in gattin' webbing throughout Mightstone Quarry.

Most of the noobz made it back. The ones smart enough to know that we're inside the blitin' metal and stone building, anyway... lolz...

Regardless, gratz, noob. I hear you sprung more than a couple blitin' peonz loose.

Be careful if you do this quest in conjunction with Taking Back Mightstone Quarry after the intended level (like at level 80 for Northrend Loremaster). The guardians who spawn out of the webs scale with your level and are set to aggressive, so they WILL run around one and two shotting mobs before you can touch them. Rather annoying.

This quest is bugged and when you kill a web you will get 1 dalaran mage (like 30% chance or nothing 69% chance) people saying that you actually can get peons but after few laps around hold I didn't get even one. But got 10+ of nothings and 5 mages.

so - this quest seems somewhat bugged for my warlock - even with pet on passive and me doing all the damage , the webs often released someone but got no credit to quest - had to "kill" like 50 webs or so before it finally updated correctly

I did this quest today as a level 65 hunter. I got a couple of empty cocoons and eleven heroes before I got my five peons. So, not a great drop rate, but not as bad an experience as others had yesteryear.

Amusingly, the heroes were only interested in getting involved in my tussles with the spiders if I was actually hit. Given my tanking pets, that only happened once. So while I was fighting, my heroes were standing around looking bored.

AoE-spells seems to be counter-productive at higher levels and provide empty cocoons. Going with weak single-target spells helped me getting the required peons.
