The Great Cat Spirit is a friendly level 70 cat found in southern Moonglade. The Great Cat Spirit's level was raised from 60 in patch 2.0.1.

Unlike the similarly appearing Great Bear Spirit, it is not currently involved in any quests, and druids obtain their cat form without interacting with it. There was once a quest for druids to obtain their cat forms that involved this NPC and an escort quest in Darkshore, but the quest was removed in early 2005 because it was felt that this gave druids too much Cenarion Circle reputation too early.

Killing it causes a loss of 250 reputation with the Cenarion Circle.

Wish they had just removed the reputation gain, not the whole quest.

Now that mages begin as "Friendly" with the mage-faction Kirin Tor -providing a fairly major bonus for them in Northrend- Blizzard's logic regarding an unfair advantage for druids gaining reputation with the druid faction Cenarion Circle is even more spurious.

According to the poster with the handle "Formula" on Thottbot:
"NE druids used to have a quest in which they had to sneak/escort an npc out of a furlbog camp in Darkshore using a catskin cloak that gave them stealth. Afterwards, they would speak to the Great Cat Spirit (which was located near the Great Bear Spirit at that time) in Moonglade."

Wowwikki says: "Unconfirmed information states that there was at one time a Cat Form quest related to the cat spirit, the NPC Volcor and the Escape Through Stealth quests in Darkshore"

These are the only two sources making even tenative claims about a Great Cat Spirit quest that I could find, so perhaps there is some confusion and it never existed or was only in beta. I haven't seen anyone recalling that they personally did a quest with this npc, but would welcome reading about it should it turn out it did exist.

Create wrote on 12-14-2005, speculating that the Great Cat Spirit was going to be involved in a Dire Cat form quest but instead the developers scaled the cat form to do better dps instead: "Bear - level 10, Cat - level 20, Travel - level 30, Dire - level 40... I noticed the progression and honestly thought Dire Cat was coming at level 50. Now that they've changed the way AP is calculated in Cat form, (It now scales with gear) I don't think we should expect an upgrade." .

So it appears from those who played beta through at least the end of 2005 that the Great Cat Spirit has never had any quests and claims that he did and they were removed due to concerns about Cen Cir Rep are unfounded.

Can't remember where I read this, but a few years ago I think I saw some solid information on how the linked quest was supposed to have been the beta druid cat form quest that was ultimately tossed out before the game went live.

The now obsolete quest had you sneak into a cave and either fight or sneak back out, all in stealthy moonstalker form. Iirc the druid beta quest had you doing the same thing on the order of the Great Cat Spirit.

Back in classic wow endgame the faction Cenarion Circle was rather important, as it had a huge impact on the best gear down in Silithus connected to AQ. Some player that had high rep killed this cat and watched his reputation plummet ...by a lot more than 250. Screenshot of that might still be on Thottbot or allakhazam or somesuch.

I always pet the Great Cat Spirit when teleport to moonglade with One with Nature.

This NPC is part of the Cenarion Circle faction and is a friendly mob. It is located at 58,73 in Moonglade and can be seen walking around in a very small area. Druids with Glyph of One With Nature have a chance of appearing in Moonglade near this NPC.

The Great Cat Spirit was intended to be part of the Druid-specific quest chain to obtain Cat Form, but the part of the chain that involved this NPC was removed before the game went live. It is speculated the only part of the quest chain that made it into the game involved an Enchanted Moonstalker Cloak that allowed you to stealth as you escorted Volcor, a Night Elf NPC, out of a furbolg camp in Darkshore. The idea was for you and Volcor not to get caught before getting out of the camp. You had another option of completing the quest, and it was titled Escape By Force, wherein the player and Volcor fought their way out of the furbolg camp. The quest that led to the escort quest was called A Lost Master, wherein the player had to locate Grimclaw alongside the road, wave at him, and the bear would then point to the direction of Volcor. It was not a Druid-specific quest when it was in the live version. Sadly, it is no longer a part of the game.

Seeing as how they removed the questline to get your cat form, and this NPC is just for flavor, it would be great for hunters (maybe BM?) to be able to tame this as a new skin. The smoke effect just looks nifty. :D
