If you mail (or give) the copy to someone else, if it was sent by an NPC and has your name in the text, when the person you gave it to reads it, it will have their name instead lol.

This is how you use it:

Step 1: Log on to an alt and write the lyrics to rick roll in a mail
Step 2: Send it to your main
Step 3: Put it out at AH for 5000g and see if some idiot buys it
Step 4: You just pwnd someone

My sympathy goes out to those who dared to indulge their curiosity and hope people would at least put a bit of effort into the stuff they were selling, particularly given the low cost of investment.

Still, the fact that we indulge our curiosity says something about the worth of this as a means of communication. For those who like finding new and interesting ways to "play" WoW, producing more creative pieces and selling them for a more reasonable price might be a worthwhile form of expression.

It's also a bit challenging. What nobody has thus far noted is that in-game mail is restricted to 500 characters. Also, since there's no way to label plain letters, letting people know that you're not just posting 10 of the same letters on the AH is tricky. The only way I've identified to differentiate between different letters is to change the price. For instance, I might sell the first piece of a story for 10s01c, and the second piece for 10s02c.

Blizzard's warden scans these letters.

So if you're planning on sending a friend a CD key or Game Key through the mail (or writing it on one of these letters then sending it in as a wrapped gift) expect a temporary ban.

Update (6.2.0):
I should've noted when I originally posted this:

I sent my friend one of these (wrapped in gift wrap) with a gametime key in it for his birthday - his account was banned shortly thereafter while mine wasn't.
Whether or not this is still 'a thing' I cannot confirm.

Most commonly, these tend to be copies of letters written by NPCs. Sometimes it's "Learn to ride at X", sometimes it's a message that accompanies a Blizzard Store pet/mount or special redemption item.

I tend to buy them when I see them listed for a few silver. So far I've not found a single one written by a player.

Still current as of Legion patch 7.2. Please do not deposit your permanent Plain Letters into the guild bank, especially if you are a letter hoarder or role-player. I made the mistake of doing that today and more than half of the messages were erased when I withdrew them. I sent in a ticket and spoke with a Blizzard Game Master about it and they said it was becoming a problem and there is no way to get back the erased letters. Pass it on and save someone a heartache.
