A good tank-player can glue the enemies to his ass with any tanking class... be it single target or AoE. All the classes have the right tools to do it. When inviting a new tank into our guild, it is never their class i look at, i just have a long interview with the guy to find out some clues about his skills.
Base your pick on your personal preference. Do you like yellow skill icons? Pick a paladin! Do you prefer green and purple? Roll a druid. Red? Warrior! Or perhaps you like the idea of a horse that makes an awful shriek everytime you summon it? Or the idea of having a dual spec that can dual wield two handed weapons?
Whatever works for you.
edit: i swear the confirmation code for this post has been 1t4nk, lol

Well...IMO...Either class makes for awsome tanks. I have a 77 Unholy spec'd DK in which I frequently tank with. I have also a 74 pally tank/healer. But as Thror had stated...it all depends on ones skill lvl. A paladin tank will give u a great sense of "How" to tank exactly namely cause they are a rather easy tank class. With my DK I usually end up tanking for higher lvl ppl. i.e....A few weeks ago I tanked Gundrak for a bunch of 80's...They couldnt find a tank willing but I figured wth....They all praised my ability to tank and hold their insane aggro...A mage...lock and ret pally were the dps for that crew so I had my work cut out. Skill is important so yea learn with a pally...Then Try out DK tank. I love both personally but each to thier own :) Just dont get frusterated and give in as many ppl tend to to...Stick it out whatever way u choose to go XD Good luck and Happy hunting :P

Just so you know, I am a paladin tank.
But DK takes it by a long shot. More health and armor, more cooldowns.
Paladins have excellent utility (hand of freedom, cleanse, bop) but in terms of tanking, they're beat in just about every by DKs. Except threat, but who really cares about that anymore.

If you're a bad player - roll a paladin, because DK's rep is in the gutter, and we don't want any more bad players.
If you're a good player - roll a DK, because we could use some more good people to get better rep.
Now lets say you're ok player:
If you don't ever want to heal - do not roll a paladin, or you may be put into that roll.
If you want to be able to heal - roll a paladin.
Paladin ret tree is getting reworked currently, I do not know what that means, except that you will have dps somewhere between a rubber chicken and a kitten.

in my curiosity i have decided i cant come to a choice on which is the best tank so i have decided to take it to the wowhead crew. i have read here and there and they go eather way. i just wanted your ideas on which is the better tank..it my sway my decision on what to lvl since i want to tank
anyway thx for the input
there is no best tank. However, paladins are a better tank than a dk (generally).
The majority of DK's are awful. Very few are worthwhile, and even fewer are those that can show off the class with great skill.
I have yet to see a DK that can tank better than a Pally (i.e. aggro loss, etc.)

both classes fits well, you can really do any job with paladins/DK/warriors/druids. It depends more on you, i also would not say one class is lol easy to play well than the others. Just remember paladins are the only class who uses mana, so in some situations we must remember that one. The divine plea improvement helps alot with that allthou now.

All tanking classes kinda overlap now, but there is a definte trend in what Deathknights and Paladins are better at:
Paladins do not have as much on-use mitigation as a deathknight does, their hitpoints tend to take big drops. They do however, AoE tank much more easily, and have higher threat. They also require a lower skill cap.
Deathknight tanks produce less threat, take more skill, have less 'baseline' mitigation, but they have very powerful cooldown based mitigation.
A practical view on these differences:
In Sarth 3D (before Ulduar at least) A deathknight tanked sarth, the classes on-use mitigation was invaluable when dealing with flame breaths that hit for 50k. They didn't need to worry about threat that much, since no one was concentrating on Sartharion.
A paladin tanked the adds, these buggers could easily run out of control and 1-shot a non-tank raid member, so it was important to have a high producing source of threat on them at all times, a lack of defensive cooldowns (in comparsion to a deathknight) were not really an issue on adds that hit for perhaps 2-3k each.
Thats just my view on the difference, each tank has its own little niche, but they can interchange roles quite easily in most cases. Its more about the skill of the player then the class they chose.
