In a 1v1 locks will generally beat mages. Sure if there is a big gear/skill gap the mage can beat them but the game mechanics favor the lock. Same way rogues tent to kill both of them.
I like the burst capabilities and the kiting/CC abilities of mages a lot. Conversly I like the DOT/pet aspects of locks.
Keep playing them till at least 20-30. At level 10 you haven't even started really specing with talents.

In a completely even fight (equal skill, equal gear) the warlock will probably win. Game mechanics. Sure, if you're really good and they're not that good, you can win. If you outgear them by a huge degree, you can probably win. But... Heh.
And don't get me started. A mage against an SL/SL lock that outgears the mage and really knows how to play, and it's going to be complete destruction XD
They're both viable, but compared to each other the warlock is going to come out at top. I love my mage though. I still play my mage. It's a personal thing.

I find warlocks ie me tends to win. Many warlocks are silly, and forget WE can be banished, ruining the standard anti warlock tactic. The other method I like is to SL the elemental with CoT, and it is rather useless. When a mage beats me, I tip my hat to them, as a faceroller can give em a hard time, and a skilled warlock is a nightmare. Mages are my favorite PvP targets because of this, they are whom I kill to feel better about the rogue that kills me; on a side note, 2xmage is fun 2v2 arena, can do serious damage. I like the 2xpom pyro teams, which trinket, AP, Pyro, PoM, Pyro (after sheeping you 2x to waste trinket) then FB, Scorch, Counterspell that heal, 1 dead, and then wail on other. Can work EXTREEMLY well, and most people tend to panic when they are gut by 2x 2.5-3k Pyro non crits, from each mage; they can kill you damn fast. Was humiliating...but a good lesson; Felpuppy should be on PASSIVE, so he doesn't run off and die...
TY guildenstern, Yeah when a mage does iceblock with pet out expecting it to DPS me, I banish it and laugh.
Look, in equivalent gear and both speced for PvP, a lock is more likely to kill the mage. The class mechanics simply favor them. Yes if you are very good and the lock suxs or your gear is better you can beat them. Same thing with rogues vs mages/locks.

Gnamy, I agree with locks beating mages but as usual your hyperbole is annoying.
How?
We have nothing to break from fear (Trinket and Ice block, yes, but since he can immediately recast, that's a pretty sad thing.).
A) Diminishing Returns on fear
B) Fear has a cast time, counterspell
Our strongest weapon? Burst damage. Too bad that doesn't work against Locks with 18k hp. (That's not an overstatement. One of my guildies' PvP lock outhealths our tanks, when they're not raid-buffed.)
High stam + Resilience will make bursting the lock down difficult. All classes stack STAM for PvP. And locks hate trying to kill holy paladins with 21k of health (cleanse, cleanse, fol, /lol). In general, for PvP burst damage > DoT damage because it can't be cleansed/decursed etc.
Our elemental gets feared away immediately.
Pro-locks will banish the elemental and save fear for the mage :)
I've never seen someone post a working tactic against a Lock. All I ever see is "lol use the water elemental, noobs!", which doesn't work, thanks to fear.
Fear is not the biggest part of this. A felhunter eating spells and silencing is a huge advantage. Affliction spec with siphon life healing away is great. Demo spec and having the FG beat the crap out of the mage is good.
A lock can beat a mage in any spec he has.
Affliction? Fear and dots all around. As long as he's draining, all of our damage-between-fears is outhealed instantly.
Stop spending so much time feared.
Destruction? They have our damage, if not more, and a gigantic amount of crit and health. Add to that a pet, and you've got yourself a winning combo.
Counter spel them, they have few instant spells you have tons. Wear resilience to reduce DoTs and crits. And most Destro will have sacced the pet.
Demonologist? They can stand still and let their pets do the work. Somehow, they seem to resist everything I do to them.
Get decent resilience and stam and the pet won't be killing you. And the resistance is from
Master Demonologist
with a felhound or felguard out.
