The first game may have been Orcs vs. Humans, but I don't think that rivalry is necessarily permanent. There are a handful of stories involving Humans and Orcs who begin to understand each other. Most notable are the stories of Thrall & Jaina or Tirion Fordring & Eitrigg.
Then there are other things to consider, such as the continued joint efforts of the Alliance and Horde. They all have a common enemy and work together to destroy them. You have places like Shattrath where both Draenei and Blood Elf have begun to work together. Even more importantly, you have Dalaran. That was once the center of magic in the Alliance, but now both the Alliance and the Horde are being allowed to enter.
I think the lore also clearly indicates that there are plenty of Orcs who can speak Common, and likely some Humans who speak Orcish at this point. I don't want to spoil anything for those who don't know/don't want to know, but I hear their is a very important human character who was recently enslaved by an Orc and later escaped. I'm willing to bet he picked up some Orcish during his stay.
I also see no reason why Blood Elves (former High Elves who were a part of the Alliance at one point) or Forsaken (undead humans primarily) wouldn't know Common.
All that said, the primary reason behind not letting us speak to the other faction is for game balance. People can yell stuff in battlegrounds and the other faction doesn't know what you are planning. It makes it harder for you to try to "team up" with members of the opposing faction to complete a quest or whatever since you're supposed to be mortal enemies.
However, at this point in the storyline, I'm not seeing the Alliance/Horde rivalry being nearly as important as it was before the Third War. There are still some prejudice and tensions between then, but they work together more and more.
I wouldn't be surprised (or be against) a new profession that allowed you to learn other languages - a linguist. It sounds like a neat idea, but honestly I don't think it would be very useful. I imagine it as profession that would allow you to learn all the languages from your faction that you don't know - Darnassian, Dwarvish, Thallasian, Gutterspeak, whatever - but then also languages spoken by some enemies - furbolgs (you can actually learn this one already), naga, murlocs, maybe even dragons. I imagine having the high level specs involve learning one more advanced language, or language from another faction. Perhaps a Common or Orcish spec.
Of course, most professions involve making/gathering things to sell - not learning some skills that may be nifty but seldom used. As much as I want to know what those Murlocs scream at me as they tear me apart, I'd rather have that herb node they are guarding so I could sell it. It sounds like an interesting concept (at least to me), but I don't see many people jumping for the opportunity when other professions will actually help them make money or get better gear (or a cool engineering mount).

eh, you cant trade with them, talk to them, group with them, and thats just part of the game you accept when you choose your faction.

I was on with one of my Horde characters and an ally did /s and typed the first letter of a word then did /s again and typed the second letter and so on. It was really slow, but you could spell out what he was typing.
Also once in a battleground an ally had figured out which letters are and aren't scrambled when you try to talk to the opposing faction and put spaces where the scrambled letters would be, it looked kind of like this:
Y ou Su c k
So I guess there are ways around it. Unless Blizzard has fixed that since then?
It hasn't been "fixed" and I don't expect it to be. You can put together phrases like that if you really want to. It just takes a lot of dedication and more effort than it's worth.

I think this thread plays on the fact that, as we are progressing through the xpax both Horde and Alliance are developing more and more common enemies. Kael'thas, Kil'jaeden, Lady Vashj, Arthas... if any of them were successful in their plans for conquest then both the Horde and the Alliance would be no more.
It's possible to successfully implement cross-faction raids in other MMOs; it's been done (notably in my mind by City of Heroes/City of Villians). They could explain the ability to communicate like this: "Of course <Race> knows <Common/Orcish>!. You think they're idiots? They just deem not to befoul their mouths speaking that drivel outside of extreme necessity; don't expect to chat them up after this job is done!"
I personally think that's what Blizzard is working toward; come the "final" expansion I would love to see a cooperative uncapped (minimum 25) raid against Sargeras that scales in difficulty depending on the number of people in the raid.
