Okay....yes I'm an idiot but what exactly is "transmogrification"? Explain it to a novice in easy to understand terms. And give some tips on getting started in Transmog!

Transmogrification, or transmog for short, is a feature that allows you to alter the appearance of a piece of gear without losing the stats of the item.
Example:
You are currently wearing
Robes of Embalmed Darkness
on your character, but you really dislike the way the robe looks. You do however have a really cool looking robe sitting in your bank, such as
Robe of Eternal Light
. Transmog allows you to use the visual/model of
Robe of Eternal Light
, while keeping the stats of
Robes of Embalmed Darkness
.
Transmog allows you to 'dress up' your character to how you want it to look, without having to wear the actual pieces of gear, and losing your stats.
The best way to acquire transmog gear is to run older dungeons/raids, and store any items you like in your bank so you can use them for transmog later on.

Awesome answer! Just what I wanted to know! I seem to have read somewhere that there is someone or something in Stormwind that can do that for you....is that true?

Indeed,
Warpweaver Hashom
in Stormwind City will allow you to transmog your gear. You can also visit
Warpweaver Ramahesh
in the Shrine of the Seven Stars in the Valley of Eternal Blossoms.
Note that you don't need to have the item you want to use for transmog in your bags, you are able to transmog items straight from your bank or Void Storage! Simply click the little arrow next to a gear slot in the transmog window, and it'll display all the items you can use for that gear slot.

It's strictly an "extra" as it's not required and doesn't improve your performance in any way. But I think it's a lot of fun. I've decked out one character to look like a
Stormwind cityguard
; another with a
modified Kor'kron look
based on the Warchief's guards in Orgrimmar; and my warlock can look like a
wanna-be rogue
for PvP, or sport a
mix of tier gear
for PvE.
If you're running low on things to do, wowhead and icy-veins are good resources for looking up gear to pursue - what it looks like, and how to get it (quests, dungeons or raids, the Auction House, tailors/leatherworkers/blacksmiths, etc.).
There are some restrictions.
You have to have the item, either in your bags or in the bank or void storage.
Armor types must be the same. Can't make your cloth robe take on the model of a plate chestpiece.
Weapon types are looser than they used to be. You can interchange among swords, maces, and axes; and among bows, crossbows, and guns; and I believe between staves and polearms. But you can't make your dagger take on the model of a sword.
You must be able to use the item whose look you want on your gear. A priest can't give his robe the model of a mage's Tier-2 robe. That priest can also not make his mace take on the model of a sword, because priests cannot wield swords.
You can't transmogrify legendary items. Can't make them look like another item, and can't make another item look like a legendary.
The item whose look you want has to be of "green" quality or higher. Can't take on the look of starter gear from level 1, or gray or white trash items, regardless of item level.
There are some restrictions on "silly" items. So you can't make your off-hand item look like
a fish
.
But beyond that, there's a lot you can do.

To help you out there are
plenty of guides
here on Wowhead for transmogrification.
There are many different ways to query the Wowhead database when looking for items. For example,
Database>Transmog Sets>Classic World Set
.
You can also check out
WoW Roleplay Gear
for more looks to choose from.
Hopefully your Orc will be looking more stylish really soon! :)
