Some AH Observations - Post Merger

My server, Quel'dorei merged with the somewhat larger Sen'jin 3 weeks ago. Here is what I have noticed so far.
Prices on most commodities have dropped. For example 28 slot bags had dropped to 3, 000 on one server and 3,400 on the other before we joined. Since the merger we have been as low as 2, 000 with 2,400/+- 100 being the norm. What seems to be happening is that the low-ballers exhibit an influence on prices that is all out of proportion to their numbers and that doubling their number in effect accelerates the race to the bottom.
On the plus side the selection of items is a lot better.

On low population servers, it is easy for one person to buy out eveything and relist them. For instance, the bags you mentioned. On Fenris-H, there were only about 5 listed at a time. Let´s say they were 3500g and all posted by one player. If someone else went in there and posted 2 for 2500.. the other player could easily buy them and list them for 3500g. Hardly anyone was selling them, so there was little risk of him being undercut again.
But when we merged, we now have 10-15 listed by multiple sellers. If that person selling them for 3500g wanted to corner the market, he would have to buy some for 3300, some for 3100, some for 2900 and then try to relist them for 3500. And then his problem is, right when he relists them, someone else come in and lists some for 3100g again. What should he do, relist bags that he just paid 3300 for at 3099? When you have multiple sellers, there is a much bigger risk of buying out and trying to relist because you always are going to be undercut again.
On Fenris at least, the price of items like that that were in limited supply went drastically down.. but the price of stuff like ore, herbs and gems increased slightly.

Any large influx of new influence on a closed system is always going to have a detrimental effect for the most part.
Like Azrile said, for high ticket prices it's impossible nay foolish to try to continually buy out your competition.
Ore, metal and herbs have dropped by around 20% on my server as a result of the market being flooded.
Oh yes and now we have twice the number of trolls too, breaking down stacks and listing as single units.
Thats always a fun time when some clown lists 1000 cloth x 1

There is no good reason why that can't be dealt with. As in the AH would show all those items as a single entry that you can choose to buy/bid on, on as many or few as you want.

Do you know of a feature or add-on that does that? I think there used to be one, but now it's not possible to buy them all as one stack anymore. But it
is
possible for someone to make a stack of 20 automatically listed as singles at the AH. I gather it's cheaper to list items as singles, but does anyone actually buy singles?

I don't know of any feature or add-on that does that but there ought to one imo. Three miles of singles is abusing the system. I buy and even sell singles from time to time so yes on the last question.

It's so they're first on the list. If someone lists 20 items in stacks of 1 for 1g each, they'll be above my listing of 1 stack of 20 for 18g total since the default AH sorts by flat price rather than unit price.
But as Wolf said, Auctionator fixes that. It's got a separate Buy window where it groups things by unit price, so if someone posts 100 items in stacks of 1 at the same price it lists them together. You still need to click a button to buy each one, but they made it a single prompt which makes it easier and quicker.
Plus if you use an addon like Postal for your mail, then you can automatically open all your AH mail, so removing single items isn't much of a hassle. It's annoying when people list single items for sure, but there are ways to reduce that annoyance factor.

Thanks for the names of those two add-ons. Tried both and both are winners. Note that Postal has to be loaded as out of date.

I need to checkout the AH there on QD as I have not had time to work my professions as much lately and attempt to increase my ingame wealth. I have not been a major AH player, but do list the shoulder enchants and belt buckles regularly. I need to expand what I work toward listing to make more.

I use CT mail mod which also allows you to open all your mail at once; I think I had auctionator (or was it called auctioneer?) at one point but it strained my eyes because it shows everything in small print (there's probably a way to fix that though).

Actually, the higher the barrier to entry a market has, the easier it is to monopolize it. One could never hope to profit by buying out copper or peacebloom and relisting it at a higher price, but Royal Satchels are a different monkey entirely.
They are time consuming to make, getting the pattern requires a level capped character and grinding out Celestials rep, and you must of course have 600 tailoring whereas anyone with a pulse and the ability learn mining can gather copper and post it on the AH.
You have to be smart about it, but it's entirely possible to profit off of buying out and reposting certain expensive items.
