Trial keys are no longer needed in order to create and play a Starter Edition Account. You can simply sign up and play for free up to level 20, with certain gameplay restrictions. However, these kind of accounts never run out of gametime, so you can play as much as you'd like.
Just follow the links below to sign up.

(obtuse humorous observation initiated) Well, at least you still have your hair.
(obtuse humorous observation complete)There hasn't been a ton of mechanical changes in the PvE scene over the past year, though I believe PvP has continued the rollercoaster ride it's been on for the past eight years. There are no more trial codes, however, as they have been replaced by
Starter Edition. I imagine you were probably higher than level 20 when you left, so I don't think this is going to be too terribly useful to you but it might let you 'scratch the itch' and see how you feel about playing again.
My advice is to hold off for a few more months and wait for Warlords of Draenor (the next expansion) to drop. There are going to be a -ton- of changes coming from staple stats like dodge, parry, hit, and expertise going away to the 'item squish' which is going to be roughly a 95% reduction in the numbers across the board. I think it would be frustrating to jump in and learn everything just to have it change on you a few months later.

As a returning player, you probably already have a Battle.net account or at least a WoW account.
There are two things you can do. You can add a Starter Edition account to your Battle.net account and play the level 1-20 content indefinitely, or you can add a Mists of Pandaria trial to your existing WoW account. You can also do both.
If you already have a Battle.net account, you can add a Starter Edition through
US Account Management or
EU Account Management.
You can use the same link to add the Mists trial to your existing WoW account.
There is an FAQ for the Starter Edition and the Mists trial.
