I think the best middle-ground between DPS and tank pets can be found in the Carrion Bird family. They have the +5% Armor
and can learn Bite, Screech, and Claw for damage. I used a Carrion Bird every once in a while and they do respectable damage. I would usually spec Dive, Bite, Claw, and Screech, alternating which ability was auto-casting (Claw or Screech) since they do not have cooldowns.
Fighting well-CCed groups, one or two enemies at a time:
Claw!
Taking on hordes of Fel orcs in Shattered Halls:
Screech!

carrio birds arent made for dps..
Not sure why you're quoting me since I never said that they were:

Carrion Birds can learn three damaging abilities and a nice speed boosting ability (like the
true DPS pet families) and do not have the -% Damage modifiers (like the tank pet families).
Source. While not built to be the top DPS pets, they certainly aren't meleeing Priests. Would you agree?
I'd also like to point out that Warp Stalkers are the only family to have a negative net modifier. Same armor as a Carrion Bird (+5%) but -6% Damage. Ouch. Anyone know if their
unique ability somehow makes up for these statistics?
*sigh*
we got 3 stable slots if you are so lame to wan't an all round pet you will fail as a hunter. 3 slots. get 1 dps, 1 grind and scorpion. there. the only real choise are cat/ravager/raptor and wind serpent. owls and bats are only damage dealers for pvp to screw the targets vision whit the large wings. the tanks are boar and birds.
thats it you can't argue whit that!
I would argue that having almost two dozen pet families available to us suggests alternatives to that trinity. Admittedly, and unfortunately, some of these families are just for flavor. (Who would honestly roll with a
Spore Bat?) But to say that someone "fails as a Hunter" based on
one of their pet choices seems rather shortsighted.
I wish that Blizzard would make the more 'exotic' pet families more appealing. I am as tired of seeing every Hunter with a Cat/Boar/Ravager/Raptor/Scorpion as I am of owning one myself. Got to keep up with the Joneses, as it were.
