Radical Mojo and getting the right spec

Does anyone know if there is a bug or trick to do with getting armor for the right spec from using Radical Mojo on a piece of latent armor? My priest was in holy spec and had holy set as loot spec, and still got a shadow spec piece of armor. I double checked my spec and loot spec before the combine, and quadruple checked them after. Both were holy. The armor is shadow. I am sad.
Is it just random? Am I missing something I should have done to get holy specced armor? Should I submit it as a bug and request a fix?

What do you mean when saying the armor was for shadow spec? Did it have hit rating? Because if not, I think it's suitable for holy spec too (and discipline for that matter), even though it doesn't have spirit.

It doesn't work based on what spec you have activated when you bought it or activated it. It works on the same system as when you raid I think. I don't know all the details, but I think it uses the spec you usually raid in or something.

The game checks what spec you are in at the time of the kill (or since 5.3 the spec you have selected in your options), and grants loot based on that. For Bonus Rolls, it looks at your spec/selected spec the moment you click "roll".
@Narinae: As yellowmana already asked, why are you saying it's Shadow gear? Does it have Hit rating?

Don't mind me rambling, I'm writing this partly for my own sake so I can start linking people to it instead of explaining it over and over.
As far as I can tell, your selected loot spec does have an impact, but it's not what most people might expect.
The stats you get are completely randomized, what your loot spec does is make sure you don't get a stat that's
completely
useless for your spec but it will still give you non-optimal stats if you can benefit from the stats at all.
So what this means in a nutshell is you won't get hit rating as a healer and you'll only have a chance to get dodge and parry if you select a tank spec.
This is where things get frustrating as a lot of the stats have a benefit for all specs, however small that may be, so there's nothing stopping the RNG from giving you, say, a shoulder with 1300 crit rating as a paladin tank when you really wanted haste or defensive stats.
This is where I start heavily speculating as my sample size is nowhere near big enough to verify my theory. If anyone can offer additional insight I'd appreciate it.
All specs
can get
mastery, crit, haste
All
DPS
and
tanks
add
hit
to the list
Melee DPS, hunters
and
tanks
add
expertise
to the list
Tanks
add
parry
and
dodge
to the list
Healers
and
hybrids with a willpower -> hit conversion
add
willpower
to the list
The game will then take the item's secondary stat budget and spend it on one or two eligible stats from the pool leaving you to curse at yet another crit/mastery belt for your protection paladin.

You can just right click on your character frame and click "Loot Specialization" then click holy if that's what you want

AHA, I see the problem. This is my first character to have specs that call for different gear sets. Early on I was told that priest healing gear = spirit. So when I heard that the Barrens gear should be "appropriate to one's spec", I assumed that for healing it would have spirit.
It's a really weird system they're using with this, apparently just to add a pointless and frustrating element of bad luck to gearing up, but at least I understand now. Thanks, guys!

, but gear without Spirit is still useful :)

Oye, ok, so spirit is great but not the be-all and end-all. This would less likely to make my head asplode if it had a cap, so I'd know when to call it "good enough".

Or are the haste/mastery/crit weights sufficiently different to require two sets? I'm intending to be primarily a 10-man healer but it'd be nice to be able to also fill the pewpewing role when we have healers aplenty.
I hope this isn't too much of a derail. But I very,
very
much appreciate the help!

You'll certainly do a good amount of damage while in Shadow spec, yes, but it is of course not optimal. You mentioned Haste/Mastery/Crit, but even the Spirit might be an issue, as you might have "too much", taking you over the Hit cap, leaving excess Spirit useless. However, I don't know for sure whether a healer might have that much more Spirit than a caster has Hit. Just something to consider.
