That depends a lot on your character. What class and spec you are, what professions you have and whether or not you have all the expansions will affect which reps you should be starting with.

Aren't they removing the rep requirements for gear next patch?

Your faction's main city (Stormwind / Orgrimmar) for getting slightly cheaper riding training and profession training. Buy the tabard from the quartermaster, equip it, and you'll get reputation from running dungeons (assuming you are low level). You will also get some rep from quests as you level.

To answer your question you have to tell us about your character-
Faction-horde or alliance?
Class?
Role-tank-dps-heals?
Level?
Professions?
If you are 90 or own Padnaria expansion, Therazane and all level 80 zone reps are unimportant.
If you are 80 and plan to never buy Cataclysm or the Pandaria expansion then yes Therazane and other 80 zones will have enchants/recipes/gear that your character may want.
Personally if i were you i would spend the 5 bucks for the Cataclysm expac, and the 20 bucks for Pandaria. Right now Bliz has a summer sale going so grab it while you can!

The Database tab at the top has a Factions subtab. Factions are organized by expansion. Within the subsubtab for any particular expansion you can view the factions associated with that expansion and the page for each faction will outline the rewards, quests, method of gaining rep etc.
In terms of endgame play, the current expansion factions are the most important, and the ones you grind rep with will depend on your playstyle, faction (Alliance or Horde), and what you ultimately wish to get out of the game.
Prior expansion faction rep is unimportant for endgame play, and can best be viewed as busywork for completionists.
