Probably someone who was quitting the game, and didn't want all their gold to go to waste.

This most likely.
Did you try to ask them why? That would have been the second thing I said, after thanking them of course lol

Yeah - I gave away over 400K when I cancelled my first account and started over.
Cheers.

While it should be fine, your account MAY get flagged automatically for being part of a large in-game cash transfer. Usually the sender/giver will be at the biggest fault though, but be ready if you get a temp ban or get locked out.
Otherwise, enjoy the free gold.

Something similar happened last night to someone in my guild.
There was a guy in trade who said he was giving away gold, mats and gear to whoever whispered him.
Apparently someone in my guild did, because they said he'd given them 20+ stacks of cloth and 50k
I think its probably a good way to avoid temptation if you are leaving the game.
If I left I'd probably go to a starter area (Tauren or Dwarven) and give away all my gold and saleable items too.

A similar thing happened to me in patch 4.3 someone gave me 250kg and said not a word ahead of time or in response to my thank yous, and nothing has ever happened because of it. No bans, no warnings, no "My brother logged into my account and gave away all my gold can I pretty please have it back", so I think you will be fine.

I think generally the flag would be raised if it were a lvl 1 player doing the trading, I'm sure they monitor much more than just the amount traded before making a call on whether to ban or suspend an account.

There was an AH-related gold dupe method going around recently that let some people abusing it amass fairly obscene amounts of gold but even if this was the source of it it (wouldn't make much sense to use exploits to get gold and then simply giving it away) shouldn't have any negative repercussions on you except possibly a temporary lock on your account for investigation like Interest outlined.

No one gave me 500k. Now I am sad.
I am very good at accepting gifts, just in case anyone is interested.

I'll do this occasionally, though not that much. Just go to a starter area and give out 10-20k to some newb. Though most times I'll challenge people to puzzles and what not for it.

Then again, most starter zones are full of people's alts that are more than willing, and less than ignorant.
The account wide achievements have spoiled this for many. All you have to do is inspect someone to see if they're "new" or not.
