All cageable battle pets that are items that you use, rather than wild pets you capture, come in two versions- the item, and the caged pet. The item will be either white, green, blue or purple in quality, and will say "use to learn how to summon this companion," or something like that. The quality of the item used to learn the pet doesn't necessarily mean that once you do learn it that pet will be the same quality as the item. There are white items that teach green or blue quality pets, and vice versa.
Once you learn a pet, you can use battle stones on them to upgrade their quality, and then cage and resell them. This is how you see caged versions of vanity pets which are normally white or green when learned, that are blue.
The white one- is the item. The pet has never been learned.
The green one- someone learned it, then put it a cage and sold it.
The blue one- someone learned it, used a battle stone on it to upgrade it to rare, put it in a cage and sold it.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

It makes sense that the blue one is more, because getting the right stone to upgrade can be a pain. The green one might have been leveled some, which is why it's posted higher. Or they might not have been paying attention.

Good point here OP.
I've got 10 lvl 25 pets now and have yet to see a dragonkin stone drop. And yeah I know it's all RNG, just sayin.
If you can afford it, it would be better to spend the extra 1.3k for a rare (You can always sell it later and if leveled up for a substantial profit usually)

Then go to the Basin, do the quests for the the Oracles and the Frenzyheart, and start the dailies for the Big Tongues to get the Egg, which has a chance for a proto-drake whelp pet.

well i dont really do pet battles i just want a little proto drake to follow me around lol. i would like to get into pet battles but i hate gold farming so ill save the money and go for the 700g one. and i bought gold once and then got hacked 3 times afterward and the GMs threatened to ban me so i probably wont be buying any moar
You deserved to be hacked, just like the poor SOB who got hacked to provide the gold you bought.
700g is nothing, certainly not worth an almost certain account ban.
Either farm the gold, Do the rep grind and buy the eggs, or catch a wild one (Emerald Proto-Whelp) if you have the pets to do it. You could also ask in trade for one at a lower price, they aren't exactly rare.
If you do pet battles leveling a team to capture this should not take more than a few hours. Plus you'll do the trainers which give you bags with a chance to loot a stone to boost your pet to rare and a chance of a rare porcupine pet. (Which will sell on the AH and money problems solved. 8k is the going rate on my server)
Whichever way you choose (barring rep and egg which is RNG) it won't take you long to get the gold needed.
