So I am fairly new to WoW, but I have managed to gear my PVE combat rogue with pretty decent gear. Current gear level is 487. I have 10.38% hit and 8.25% expertise. My rotation is ambush, sinister strike, revealing strike, sinister strike, then rupture. Then I hit killing spree for a cool down and come back with the same order as above, but with eviscerate. I cannot get recount to work on my computer so I cannot elaborate more than that. Thanks for any help! Deyanira

for starters your hit and expertise are too high. go to askdrrobot.com, upload your toon and fix your stats. then take the link below your toon to go to icy-vines and look at your rotation to make any corrections that need to be made.

Correct site is
Ask Mr. Robot
. Good for setting your gems, enchants & reforges to optimum level. Kingbeck is right though - right off the bat your hit & expertise are too high - 7.5% max on each, then put the rest into Haste for combat spec. Also where is Slice & Dice in your rotation? #1 must-have for max dps. There's a good rotation guide at
icy-veins.com
.

If I remember correctly its Haste>Mastery>Crit. But I see people doing Mastery=Haste>Crit and S&D must be on all the time so does rupture. And I would say Garrote over Ambush.
Its because haste will regen much more energy than you need sometimes. And if you're frequently finding yourself to be energy capping, go mastery. HOWEVER, haste gives you more white hits which makes more poison procs and mastery procs, so currently you should probably keep reforging for haste.
I used ambush over garrote, this is because garrote only gives 1 combo point, while ambush gives 2. Plus if you're speced into shadow focus, it's pretty much free.
Also, you ALWAYS want to use revealing strike (RvS) before Sinister Strike (SS) because RvS gives you a 20% chance to proc an extra combo point, and it makes your damaging finishers hit harder. So always have it up unless your very very next move is Slice&Dice (SnD) or Recup since these two do not benefit from RvS buff.

Ok, so I guess I was confused some about hit and expertise. I thought 7.5% was the minimum and above that was good. If it's off by a few points is it better to be above or below 7.5%? I can easily reforge everything, but we all know it's not going to be a perfect 7.5%.
As for rotation, I'm getting a little contradictory info here. So let me try to re-cap what it sounds like might be best...
Ambush (2cp), reveal strike (1cp), ss (1cp), ss (1cp) then s&d At this point I am typically with no energy, so I pop my trinket, shadow blades and hit killing spree.
At this point I should have some energy built back up so reveal (1cp), ss (1cp), ss (1cp), probably out of energy so adrenaline rush then ss (1cp), ss (1cp) and then rupture?
So no eviscerate? That seems to do the most damage? I played with S&D, but it just didn't seem to do anything, but I get it. 40% increase in auto attack adds up. Especially if I am out of energy. That seems to be my biggest challenge. Feels like I'm waiting too long to hit a button, because my poor little rogue is drained.
I need to google macros. So could you tell me more about how it works? Does it count my combo points so I know when to finish? That would be huge, because there is no way for me to know how many points I have.
Garrote vs ambush...2 cp vs 1 cp? Garrote seems ot make sense against any caster class, but why would you use it against anything else? The damage that it accumulates over 17 secs (maybe it was 18secs).
Thanks for all the input! Hit 489 yesterday, so I would like to actually be a positive factor in lfr and soon in real raids :)

Is this pvp or pve?
Personally (for pve) I do Mark for Death, SnD, Ambush, RvS, SS, Rup (*might* be at 5 CP if my SS proced a CP), SS, SS, (at shallow insight here from bandit's guile). Pop KS, burn some more energy from standard rotation, pop AR and SB at the same time.
However, if I've got 4 piece t15 (the newest tier) then I'd pop AR then SB IF I find myself to be constantly energy capping. Supposedly our GCD will be shortened down to .5 seconds if we pop these two together with the tier bonus and glyph. SOOOO you probably will not want to waste 3.5 seconds of SB on KS because of this.
If you don't take the anticipation talent, you should be using your finishers at 4 combo points unless you can pool energy to RvS for a guaranteed 1 CP to refresh the duration. This is b/c RvS ONLY gives you 1 CP, while SS gives you 1.2 CP with the RvS debuff on the target. So if RvS still has 7+ seconds, and your target has 4 or more CP, use a finisher. If 3 or less, use SS.
EDIT: when you have SB buff up and don't have anticipation talent, you'll want to use finishers mostly at 3+ cp instead of 4+. And if your game play is laggy and you find yourself constantly energy capping, you should reforge for mastery or go assassins spec. Combat is a VERY spammy dps class to play.

Regarding hit cap and expertise cap, it takes 2 about hit to rival the good you get for 1 haste if you are talking about BIS t15 gear. This is because rogues dual wield and regular "white melee hit" cap is something like 26.5% which is insane, but the benefit for getting these extra white hits is marginal compared to if this hit was haste.
For expertise, assuming you are behind the boss 100% of the time, it gives you 0 benefit to be over the expertise cap since the boss can't dodge any less than 0% of the time. However, if you were mostly in front of the boss, that's a whole different story.

i cant stand askmrrobot, im a combat haste rogue, mr robot has no idea what a haste rogue is and almost does a backflip if i enter my toon,
Not sure what you mean by a backflip Shanker - Ask Mr. Robot has me gemming Haste in every socket except my meta and my legendary, and reforging to haste whenever possible. Current haste sits at 9242 on
ilvl 500 combat rogue
. I know the site would wonder (just like I am) why you went +stam on four of your gems? And I think crit has been proven almost useless for combat, while Mastery gives you a chance to proc an extra attack at 120% of MH damage. But if Ask Mr. Robot is not your thing then maybe try
Shadowcraft
, I think it's probably more mathematically accurate, but the interface is difficult. Or download the latest
SimulationCraft
and try your own theorycrafting.
According to the sims, Rupture is a small dps advantage over Eviscerate as a finisher, but only 1) if your target will last longer than 24 seconds, 2) you use it with 5 combo points, and 3) you don't clip it (i.e. you need to let it expire completely before renewing). Eviscerate is what you use in every other case. Some rogues drop Rupture completely from their rotation and do just fine with Eviscerate as their only damage finisher. When I've just hit Adrenaline Rush or the raid pops Heroism and I'm constantly in danger of being energy capped, I drop Rupture and just spam Eviscerate.
As for Slice & Dice, take a look at your recount totals after a fight, and look at what % is Melee damage. Now imagine increasing that total by 40%. SnD increases your regular (white) damage by a ridiculous amount, and there's no good reason not to have it up at all times.
And yes, rogues always feel like they're waiting on their energy bar, but to me it's not nearly as frustrating as trying to generate rage on a warrior, or going OOM on a caster - energy regen is smooth and constant, and we even get bonus energy from procs.

One of the reasons people drop rupture from rotation is because it costs less energy to use rupture than eviscerate. Therefore, if you're in an energy starved period with 5 cp on target and not clipping the dot's up time, it is advised to use rupture for a marginal dps gain.

Yea... saving AR/KS/SB for lust is bad since it is guaranteed that you will be energy capping. It is still best to pop the cds asap even on lust due to Relentless Blades like you mentioned.

Hi
Stats Expertise to 7.5% >= Hit to 7.5% > Haste > Mastery > Crit
If you need to reforging please check shadowcraft
http://shadowcraft.mmo-mumble.com/
if you need to check a rogue rotation go mmoomo.com
http://www.mmoomo.com/wow/pve/rogue/combat/rotation
or icy-veins.com
