and Arcane Blast is costing more mana, I find myself running low on mana a lot as Arcane. I dropped Rune of Power for Innervate and that at least gives me my mana back, but my dps is much lower than it use to be.
Is there a new "rotation" that replaces scorch weaving? I noticed a lot more Frost mages now in LFR. Would I be better off going the Frost spec?
Just for the record, I'm not complaining about the change, not happy with it, but meh it's a "whatever". I just need to know what people learned from PTR so I can apply it to my playstyle.

Eh, nevermind, I found that Noxxic updated their website for 5.2
Anyone interested can read up on it
here
. Completely different from what I was doing just yesterday.

I've also just gotten my
Arcane Mage 5.2 PvE guide
approved. You will find all you need to know there.
(did check the Noxxic link out of curiosity, and we do say almost the same)

I tried the new Arcane rotation as well as a Frost spec. On the dummies, Arcane was a bit better by about 4k dps. In groups and raids, the difference wasn't noticeable.
Frost seemed more forgiving with the mana though, with Arcane if you miscount your stacks or have to leave your rune of power for a couple of seconds, it really punishes you. Alter time seemed to benefit Frost more than Arcane too.
I think I'm going to run with Frost for a bit now that it's a viable dps spec. I've been Arcane since Wrath and to be honest, it's a refreshing change.

This is just a theory but i got to looking at our skills today. We can't use scorch anymore as we all know. I looked it up today and scorch cost 2% of our base mana. While looking at our skills ice lance only costs 3000 mana. I realized scorch was channeled and that accounted for a little bit of the mana regen but with ice lance being insta cast and proper usage, would it be a viable substitute for scorch? We're capped at 300k and 2% would be 6k so........ 2 ice lance shots would essentially be about the same as scorch. Or am i missing something.

Probably the abysmal damage Ice Lance puts out on non-frozen target. :)

Possibly, i remember scorch did 15k something and each shot of my ice lance does 6.5-7k. So 2 shots shouldn't be that less. I'll test it out later and see how viable it would be.

Checking with some math, taking around 26000 spellpower, Scorch will do an average of 22k damage and Ice Lance, 6769 damage. Note that both will have basically the same cast time, it doesn't seem like Ice lance can really replace scorch for Arcane.

Yeah dps wise your right, i was strictly thinking about mana regen time.

I had been under the impression that spirit has absolutely no effect on mage/warlock regen since the talent overhaul that changed their mana regen (introduction of nether attunement, etc..). Pretty sure Blizz specifically said it would be useless for dps casters except as an alternate source of hit rating for spriests/boomkin/ele. Spirit is still useless for mages.

Spirit for non-healers only affects out-of-combat mana regen. It does absolutely nothing for your in-combat mana regen.

Healers get this ability called
Meditation
, which allows 50% of your spirit to continue while in combat. Other classes, including mages, don't get this.
Now, if what you say is true, and all class regen mana by spirit in combat, wouldn't that ability be kind of redundant?
That's not to say we don't regen mana in combat, we do, at a constant rate and affected by Nether Attunement, but it is not affected by Spirit.

Look at your character screen for Spell.
You have combat regen and out of combat regen. The discrepancy between those two numbers are your Spirit (you have a bit base Spirit and the +80stat buff from chest enchant). Stack more Spirit and the only number that will go up is out of combat regen.
So just to reiterate: Spirit is absolutely and totally useless :)

That 3% could be put toward mastery or haste. Not spirit where it is wasted. Nothing is ever put towards spirit for magi. Although i will ask when did expertise start going towards spell hit? Noticed askmrrobot reforging stuff to expertise and when i asked about it they said that expertise go towards spell hit now............?
