In 4 years I've never seen a patch go live in the projected time. None. The one single thing about it that bothers me is the fact that if I know it; they know. They know, before they even start, that it won't be done by 11:00. Just be honest about it, Blizz. It's cool. These things take time. Just be realistic with us from the start how much time it will actually take.
this is not true. In the vast majority of major patches, the maintenance goes longer than it should, but there's plenty of patches that go live without extra time.
4.0.3 (The patch that added the cataclysm-content to EK/Kalimdor) was released without maintenance. Cataclysm itself was launched without any maintenance at all.
3.2 was released without extended maintenance.
so no, that "in 4 years I've never seen a patch go live in the projected time" is false. Having said that I do agree with you in that hiccups and unexpected delays are highly likely, and they just should be realistic and flat out say "realms will be down until further notice" rather than:
"realms will be down till 1 pm"
"We had a problem, more info on 2 pm"
"We had a problem, more info on 3 pm"
"We had a problem, more info on 4 pm"
"We had a problem, more info on 5 pm"
this gets annoying, and on my nerves. I'd feel better if they just flat out said "they're down till we say they're up" and that's it.

I would rather them say a later time initially and then reopen early, than string us along like Rankkor said.
"The servers are down until 3pm PST" and they come up at 11am PST would be better than seeing
"The servers are down until 11am PST."
"Maintenance extended until 12pm PST"
"Maintenance extended until 1pm PST"
"Maintenance extended until 2pm PST"
"Maintenance extended until 3pm PST"
"Servers are now live. Updated 4pm PST."
Edit:
Why do these threads pop up every time there is a patch or maintenance? It's the same thing every time...people moaning and groaning because they can't get their WoW fix.
Heck, there was
one
on the front page already...

Agreed. While I don't think this type of thing should ruin anyone's entire day, you do wake up on a patch day with a plan to work on x and y and get z done before you move on to q. For me, it isn't so much the fact that it's taking long than expected as it is that it dashed my plans.
...I guess there's not very much of a difference there. I feel like it's subtle. *shrug*
At least if they overshoot the expected release time, we can be pleasantly surprised
and
be able to meet these expectations.

A bit late to the party, but oh well.
I personally never expect to play until after dinner on patch days and spend the time deep cleaning the closets or other places that only need to be done periodically.
