There is always need for an effective/aware healer in any group.
Sadly for those of us who PUG, competent healers are not all that common - My guess is that they know better and avoid PUGs. ^-^
As for disciplines, there are a number of guides here to weigh the pros and cons of each but overall just go with what you personally feel comfortable with.
It really is not that hard to switch around spec's before you invest too heavily in gear.

Hey philup, welcome back!
I too recently returned to Wow after an extended absence. I had played a holy priest through WotLK, and thought that I would like to return as such. However, the Discipline priest ultimately proved more engaging and I ended up switching.
::This is based on my experience in leveling and dungeons, and is probably not applicable to raids::
The difference between holy and discipline, as far as I have been able to tell at the moment, is that discipline is proactive in preventing damage while holy is reactive in healing damage. So it really depends on how you want to play your healer when it comes to deciding between the two.
Other aspects I enjoy about discipline is that it seems to have more utility for battlegrounds than holy, it is reasonably easy grind without switching to shadow (though as N0083rP00F has pointed out, it isn't at all hard to switch specs between soloing and group work, so this is really a testament to my laziness).
From what i have heard, the gear you will earn through level 85 is superfluous to your endgame designs, since it will all be replaced in Pandaria anyhow. Obviously, since I am taking it slow and halting my xp gains to explore content, I do not know how true this is.
I'll close on this, as there are people more qualified than I to ramble about the glories of the discipline priest. Spirit Shell is amazing. Absolutely amazing and is, in my opinion, a superior damage prevention mechanism than anything which a holy priest can put out.
