You know you paid at least $200 just to have the Alienware name on your case, right?
Building a computer isn't too hard to do by oneself. You can find hundreds of tutorials on YouTube and the Internet in general. I recommend giving it a try; you can't have your nerd card without at least trying once.

I didn't care... I really like the laptop, it's case and the built in features I wasn't able to find elsewhere. It's a lot more complicated to build your own laptop. I do, and have, built my own desktop.

Alienware products
High quality finish when it comes to design aspects, perhaps one of the best looking machines on the market for style. Only down side is a semi-heavy price tag. They have good quality parts & you don't have to build the thing. Comes with some nice package deals, customer support. Worth looking at.
"Only buy direct from company, no 3rd party company".
Building computers, for the very first time.
Always do some research before hand, never buy something straight away, loads of information about. With step by step guides & what to stay clear from, & what is best for you. Always plan ahead on what kinda price range you can afford. Search different types of information from, magazines to websites, forums.
Give yourself a time-frame, no point buying something at the start of the year & then buying parts the following year, you will lose money this way. End up with a computer you didn't really want. Computer parts don't really have a very long shelf life before the price drops or they get updated to a better model. So sometimes best to get "x" amount of money & then start buying.
"Do you really need to upgrade just yet?"
"This is a good question you need to ask yourself".... "if you hold out a year longer you could save yourself loads of money, also get a more powerful computer"
Tip
"Sometimes just getting some new Ram or perhaps a new Graphics card can increase the life span of your computer" ( increase performance dramatically* )
My Philosophy, concerning computer products
"The market is always out of date"
...Keep this in mind:
Everything will always be out of date, even when you buy products that have just been released onto the market, in most cases. This might seem a strange concept to grasp or perhaps sound rather stupid. But the production lines never stop making new technology / products. With this in mind, & how fast the new games need more & more powerful systems to run.
This information is worth taking into account:
How many times have you gotten something, then the next month something new, has came out. You get the sick feeling when you then see something for half the price you paid for it. Or something new just came on the market for less money & loads better stats then what you had only just gotten. This on kinda risk is what makes buying such a daunting task.
Things you might want to think about:
The machine you buy today, will it last you "x" amount of years?
The better the system / how powerful the system is, will increase the life span
Spending that little bit more money, could save you spending more money in the long run.
Think before you buy.

Hands down the BEST customer service in the entire industry.
I own two of their systems. I'll never buy from anyone else...ever again.
I have a 3 year old desktop that still plays WoW on the highest settings, dual monitors.
I have a laptop that is second to none.
You may pay a bit more but look around and see if you can find anyone else with the
reputation these guys have.
If you're willing to spend the money on a Alienware...do yourself a favor and order one
from Puget. Do your research...you won't be disappointed.

I just recently bought a new computer (Alienware Aurora R4, had it 3 days, great so far *fingers crossed*) and so I did a bunch of research about Windows 8 and ended up getting 7 instead.
Windows 8 is a really great product for mobile devices with touchscreens/touchpads, or if you need seamless integration across multiple platforms, or you just really love apps and want a desktop full of app displays. For anyone who just wants a traditional desktop, it's an inconvenience in a considerable number of ways. At least, that was my opinion after reading/watching several reviews and walkthroughs.
The problem is, there are some new DirectX graphics functionality which has been made exclusive to 8, much like how DirectX 10 was originally exclusive to Vista in an attempt to force people to switch from XP. Hopefully they will release a more conventional desktop OS which supports it before game developers start to require that feature set.
