I currently have two 85 resto shamans (love them), and I'm currently leveling one of them to 90. I've been healing since vanilla, so it's pretty safe to say that I've experienced basically every situation a pug group can offer in a dungeon. My biggest word of advice to you is to practice, practice, practice. No amount of gear will ever be able to compensate for an abundance of poor skill.
Keep everybody topped off as best as you can without crippling your mana pool. The tank is your priority, and while the DPS'rs are there to make fights go faster and therefore allow you to maintain your mana pool, they are expendable. If a DPS dies, learn what went wrong and try to fix it for next time, but don't get discouraged. The less players there are to heal, the less mana you'll spend healing. So if you have a DPS'r doing something stupid, it's better to let them die then to drain your mana pool and wipe because you didn't have the mana to heal the tank.
Use your lesser heals as often as possible. They take longer to cast, but they are good at maintaining max HP without crippling your mana pool. If the tank is getting smashed hard and fast, healing surge works well. If someone takes a big hit and you need the time to focus on the tank, toss a big heal on that person rather then spending the time using smaller heals to get them back to max HP. And lastly, be honest with the group. Tell them that you are a new healer and to give you some slack. Also tell them that you are willing to leave the group if it appears that your healing is to blame. It's better to leave a group on good terms rather then getting kicked because you will get discouraged from healing very fast otherwise.
I hope this helps, and good luck!.

I wouldn't worry about overgearing for heroics. It might not work in every group, but you can get carried as a healer if the other 4 are competent. Just let 'em know you're working on more gear and they made need to go a bit slower than normal.

Not to mimic what was already said, experience and practice are all you can really do to improve.
A little something that could help you. Pay close attention to your procs (there are a lot of addons that make this a lot easier). Tidal Wave is going to be your best friend.
Tidal waves is a proc effect triggered by casting Chain Heal and Riptide. While you have tidal waves up, Healing Surge gains 30% increased crit chance, increasing its mana efficiency through resurgence and its total healing potency. Healing Wave and Greater Healing Wave's cast times are reduced by 30%.
If you're familiar with Resurgence, it's pretty much free mana back when you score a critical heal. Also, stick with Healing Wave for the most part, until your gear allows you a bit more freedom to use Greater. As it was said earlier, heroics nowdays are fairly straightforward. Have a couple beers and heal away, you'll do fine! :)

agreed with the above comments, i would also recommend using 2 addons, 1st being decursive. Very good for dispelling casts. the 2nd would be Healbot. i wont heal without it, Makes life so much easier. You can assign your mouse buttons when your moused over it (i.e i have my left click set for healing surge, my right for healing wave, and my shift right click for greater healing wave) this addon makes life so much simpler. i really would recommend them. But use whatever you feel comfortable with. If your having any problems with your spec or rotations, check out noxxic :) there really helpful there too.

I strongly advise you NOT use these addons or any addons that assist in healing
period
. I'm sure they work, but the problem I've noticed is people rely on them too heavily and come patch day, they can't even do a regular 5-man because they don't know how to heal. Blizzard has made it easier to raid without any addons, and the WoW interface works just fine for healing. You'll never get better at healing if you rely on addons to do the hard work for you. If you want an addon to use for healing, get recount so you can see where you sit amongst other healers. If you're much lower than other healers of equal gear (depending on the fight), then you know you need to improve on something.

oh aye it does make healing alot easier and if you learn to rely on it you will fail, I myself still have all my spells set out in the order i had them from 3 years ago. But then the point you bring up is true for ALL addons, why use DBM if people use it from the start they dont need to learn boss fights.
I personally rely on these addons like you say, not because i cant heal without them, but to the point they make my life so much easier that if it means waiting 2 days after a patch for all my addons to be updated, i will wait. Not because i cant heal without them, but because im lazy.

You don't need any addon to heal, just pay attention. And I've been healing raids since end of vanilla. Why do I need an addon to decurse or cast heal wave? That is why my keyboard has a 2 & 5 key, for cleanse spirit. The only addon I needed to heal was one that told you vendor price of items (this was before it was default in the ui) so I could destroy the cheap stuff while I was bored healing.
