Use
to trap one mob. Plan ahead, if you see that you will pull 3-4 mobs, plan to freeze one, and have your pet aggro the others. Turn off the autocast on pet abilities while you
Growl
each of the mobs: Remember, they will not aggro you until you attack/trap them or
Mend Pet
your pet.
Putting serpent sting on all mobs is a sure way to get aggro yourself. focus on one mob at a time instead of aoeing (multishot, exp. trap, etc.)
Sometimes, if your pet is taking a lot of abuse, it can even be beneficial to have one mob beat on you - you can usually take some damage - while the pet handles the rest. In some circumstances you can circle-kite the one aggroing on you around where the pet is fighting using
Concussive Shot
for instance.

Arcane shot IS the mid damage/mid focus cost shot. the High damage/High cost shot is Kill command (for BM), Explosive Shot (for SV) and Chimera Shot (for MM) when looking at instants (MM additionally gets Aimed Shot).
Though for some reason I'm egetting the impression the post isn't about levelling/PvE, but about PvP - is this correct?

I've run into this problem multiple times in both Leveling/PvE and PvP. It's quite frustrating, but is more of a major issue in PvP, as it is easier to generate threat on your pet during Leveling/PvE than trying to convince another player they should attack your pet.
While it does seem that Arcane Shot costs too much, perhaps it would be better if there were some way of regenerating focus a little quicker? I dunno, it just feels to me that, despite draining a fair amount of focus, that Arcane Shot is working the way it should?

Focus regeneration, as a mechanic.
For me i have never suffered any issues of running dry
/
empty focus bar. Where the problem starts is when you don't pay
"attention"
to your
"focus
bar"
.... In order to combat such problems, you need to ajust your
"Rotation"
& how much your abilities will cost per rotation. So many amazing guides about for good information on rotation.
Once you have mastered a good rotation, then you need to look at mobility of you & your pet.
As a hunter you always need to keep on the move & pay attention to what your pet is attacking.
When i say on the move, i mean keep a good distance from you & the targets you happen to be shooting at. Nothing should be humping your leg at any time. This will make using focus gain abilities loads easier to manage.
"So always keep a good distance at all times".
Your pet is a handy tool, but in order for it to do the job intended you need to
"Micro manage"
the pet. So make sure you learn what the pet is able to do.
Next, use your traps wisely. Well you should always be using traps. Placement of these will make playing hunter easy or rather hard. Become a custom to what does what.
-----
Some Basic abilities to help with staying alive.
As a hunter like any other class, people will say
"You have some of the best mobility, abilities in the game"
Such as, avoid damage from getting hit & moving away rather quick when needed. With this in mind, lets look at them abilities that will help you manage your
Focus
Feign Death
You need to use this ability as much as possible, try to avoid using it near the mobs that are attacking you. Short cooldown, will come in handy for both pvp / pve. For PvP this ability is amazing. Since as soon as you hit the ability the player will lose target, works amazing on casters, with "
". For melee use "
Disengage
" then "
Feign Death
" (might not work on good players).
Disengage
This ability is amazing, pay attention to what is happening around you before you use this. Do you really need to use this ability straight away, is what you need to ask yourself. Since you can always use "
Concussive Shot
" , "
Ice Trap
" & many other spells.
In pvp you have the option of waiting to use"
Disengage
" till the player is on-top of you or use before they come close... depending on the class.
-----
AoE dps, without getting hit (pve)
Ice Trap
works amazing with Strafe, circle moving. You place the trap & keep moving around the ice slick, just outside of the ice slick. Because you're moving in a circle the mobs effected by the ability will change direction all the time & hardly move out of the area effect.
Use your dps abilities & "
Explosive Trap
" at the sametime. When you run out of focus switch aspect to "
" then back again.
"This information ins't detailed... but this should help you never run out of Focus, if you use most of the abilities i suggested. Also the details are limited to player style... so perhaps these might not work for you. So many options you can cover in play style"...

TotH is a pretty darned good talent for levelling as well as questing and soloing in general.
That it performs sub-par to the other 2 in a standstill, singletarget bossfight does not make it a bad talent, just a talent thats for other stuff.

TotH is bad focuswise because the other 2 choices are better - also TotH procs "too often" to be fully used leading to wasted free shots, meaning you will almost always lose a third of the focus it "provides"

how are almost constant free arcane shots not good 'focus wise'?
have you tried it?
I use the ability, i hardly ever have to use Cobra shot at all, since the proc seems to be up all the time. So in PVP for me, it works amazing, being able to spam Arcane shot / Multi-shot, like a machine gun of endless bullets. Only reason i have to use Cobra shot is to get focus back up for my Kill Command, refesh my dot.
Kinda feels like a free killing spree, turret damage of endless fun. Multi-shot works on over-drive.
Kinda confused why my gun doesn't over-heat. Works amazing if you happen to be doing RBG's & defending a flag.
RBG leader "shouts"
,
"KILL THAT BLOODY HUNTER!..........."
Feign death, Multi-shot, Multi-shot.....
In the background on vent, you can still listen to the little goblins gun using:
Multi-shot, Multi-shot, Multi-shot........... Broken record....Multi-shot
*giggles*
Suddenly the hunter Feign death (again) & clicks the flag. (They thought they killed me)
Multi-shot, Multi-shot, Multi-shot.....
Off topic..
I wonder what would happen if you had 5x BM hunters & 5x Arm's Warrior in the same RBG team.
5x Warrios, charge.../knock down... Hunters trap & stampede (25x pets) all at the sametime. Would be rather interesting to see. Global heaven.
