Download it while you sleep.. That's about the only advice I can give. Also, there are mirror sites for patches (Gamespot, etc.) You may get faster speeds there, or do a torrent search. Also, there's a converter you can download so you can use a torrent program to get the patch (although why you wouldn't just use the built-in downloader is beyond me.)

Not sure if this is an option for you but you can copy your whole "WoW" programs file folder to your new PC. No need to install again.

I run WOW on a removable drive so that I do not have to maintain the addons between computers and it works wonderfully

you sell your pc, buy a mac. Lend your friend's mac, witch has world of warcraft installed.
You make an backup of the WOW folder. You clean the cache and WTF you then put a network cable between the computer and you just
DRAG it OVER to your DESKTOP
Scwoooooop säger det and your in the game!
Scwoooooop it says(sounds)
ALL that for only 5K and worst prestanda!
Ahh.. i really love (HATE) my mac...

I'm going from XP to windows 7, don't think it'll work because the program files are in different locations. But even if it would work, I don't have an external hd or flash drive large enough for the transfer.
It works just fine if you run as Administrator.
My current install of WoW was installed on a Windows XP box back when SSC was progression content, and is now on a Win7 box with zero issues.

YOUR PLAYING FROM AN USB PORT?
sorry if this has nothing to do with the topic.
But playing media(not photos or documents) direct from the external drive via usb is not good for your external drive. It could destroy it since usb is not builded for that kind of stuff. I would recommend you to move your world of warcraft folder to your hard drive ASAP.
If of course you don't know exactly what you are doing.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean...using USB or e-SATA won't affect how the the hard drive reads and writes. The only real difference should be read speed, which USB 2.0 is more than fast enough.

Not even kind of.
USB is an interface, not a drive type. SATA, IDE, SCSI, etc. They're interfaces. A USB Hard Drive is *more* than fine to run WoW off of. Stop spreading horrible lies. (FYI: I'm a PC Technician by day, and I run WoW of a USB HDD. It's fine.)
Then i have been tricked *blush*
