What would life be like, without taste buds.

In trade chat the other day, someone asked what life would be like without tastebuds.
I'm not very good at this kind of stuff, but here is my opinion.
People have said we have taste buds to detect poisons and rancid food, and without taste buds, there would be fewer humans around. I agree on that. But, if human beings were born without taste buds, who's to say there would be as much poisonous materials around? Food also wouldn't be too much of a problem, we wouldn't care how it tasted. We could use our sense of smell to determine if a food was past its due.
So, without taste buds, we would heavily rely on our sense of smell for food and such. That would pose a problem to people who can't smell. I'm sure someone would find a way to circumvent this problem.
Anyway, without taste buds, restaurants (if there would be any) would rely on scent to draw their customers in.
( Think "Did you see about this new restaurant in town? I hear their food smells good.")
As for poisons, I'm not learned enough to say anything about this.
I would think, with all the use our sense of smell would get, it would be more acute.
That's all I have to input on the matter, I'm getting distracted...
So, what do
you
think life would be like without taste buds?

If we had no taste buds, then no one would be overweight because everyone would just eat healthy food.
America's problem solved. ^.^

Smell and taste are closely related and interdependant. Salt, for instance, is one of the only flavors that is tasted entirely by the tounge. For us to lose our sense of 'taste' would also mean we would have to lose our sense of smell.
At first glance, marmalade has a point, but I think the biggest change would be our inability to taste when something was bad. Have you ever bitten into something rotten? I have. I immediately spit it out. I can't imagine not knowing better, and eating the entire rotten meal. I imagine many many people would die from food poisoning very quickly. Taste, like our other senses, has been developed by our body for our survival.

Lol. I came to this thread with a simple hope. That with no taste buds, we'd have a healthier America with no taste buds
Then MyTie came, with facts and logic. My hope didn't stand a chance.
